Anticipated JRPGs in 2014 [Update]

Many have already declared that 2013 is the year of the JRPGs, thanks to the mass release of these games this year from the likes of Tales of Xillia, Ni No Kuni, Fire Emblem, Dragon’s Crown and Pokemon X & Y.

But the JRPG fever isn’t over yet, as more JRPGs were announced for a 2014 release. It’s not December yet, but let’s take a look on what games will be coming out next year, do take note that we will only feature JRPGs that will be localized and was announced for a 2014 release. We updated the list with new games that are confirmed for a localized release.

Drakengard 3 (PS3)

More of a prequel to the first Drakengard game, the masterpiece by Producer Takamasa Shiba will give you more hack and slash adventures with a twisted and bizarre story.

 

Tales of Xillia 2 (PS3)

The sequel to the PS3 game Tales of Xillia will feature a new protagonist with the ability to switch to different arsenals, it’ll also feature the cast from the first game, Namco Bandai sure is on the roll with its line up.

 

Tales of Symphonia Chronicles (PS3)

This HD remake of the classic Tales of Symphonia games was a big surprise for the Tales fans. It will feature the original games plus the Dawn of The New World sequel all in HD glory, plus you can finally have the option to select English or Japanese voice acting.

 

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)

The third and final chapter of Final Fantasy XIII, this will only feature Lightning as the playable character with the ability to switch her outfit that can give her different attacks and spells as she tries to save the world within 13 days.

 

The Witch And The Hundred Knights (PS3)

This stage-based, action RPG from Nippon Ichi will surely give you a non-stop, hack n’ slash action. You take control of the Hundred Knight that was summoned by the swamp witch Metallica to defeat her witch adversaries across different areas.

 

Bravely Default (3DS)

This was dubbed as the ‘spiritual successor’ of Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light. If you are a fan of classic JRPGs, the usual turn-based combat and chibi characters. Then Bravely Default will be worth the wait.

 

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix (PS3)

The second half of the Kingdom Hearts HD compilation was announced recently, this will feature Kingdom Hearts 2 and Birth by Sleep as well as the cinematic videos from Re;coded.

 

Child of Light (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U)

Although this wasn’t developed in Japan, Child of Light features some aspects that you normally find in JRPGs along with beautiful 2D artworks. More surprisingly this was developed by the same team who created Far Cry 3.

 

Fairy Fencer F (Vita)

One of Compile Heart’s line of RPGs this year, this game features Yoshikita Amano’s concept artworks and Nobuo Uematsu as its composer. Its battle system is the evolved version from Hyperdimension Neptunia.

 

Demon Gaze (Vita)

A dungeon crawling JRPG developed by Kadokawa Games and published by NIS America that lets you hunt down and seal demons in the dungeon, in with you can summon them during battles. You can also interact and build relationships with your NPCs while taking a break in an inn.

 

Mugen Souls Z (PS3)

The second installment of Mugen Souls, this game from Compile Hearts and Idea Factory features a turn-based tactical battle system  similar that from the Agarest War and Hyperdimension Neptunia series.

 

Battle Princess Of Arcadias (PS3)

Battle Princes is more of a side-scrolling action RPG from NIS America, you’ll be able to recruit members to your team and slay monsters in every skirmishes and you can tackle on boss battles in certain missions.

 

Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited (Vita)

The crazy-yet-awesome PlayStation 3  tactical RPG is getting a Vita port this year, with additional scenarios plus new skills, spells and techniques. Also, all of the PS3 DLCs will be available to the game.

 

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster (PS3 & Vita)

One of the best Final Fantasy game from PlayStation 2 is finally getting an HD remaster. The collection will also include the sequel X-2 and also both games will be in their ‘International Edition’ versions.

 

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter (PC & Vita)

The long awaited second game of the Trails in the Sky story of The Legend of Heroes is coming to PC and PSP/Vita via digital download. The second game was almost cancelled due to the poor sales of the first game, but thanks to the success of the Ys games’ Steam release, the release for the Second Chapter was confirmed this year.

 

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth (3DS)

The Persona spinoff will feature a dungeon crawling-based gameplay which different from its traditional gameplay. The game will also feature characters from Persona 3 and 4 as well as new character original for this game.
