Sunday X Magazine Game Review

Anime and manga lovers rejoice, Sunay X Magazine for the PSP is here and I have a review special for the game.

Sunday x Magazine: Shuuketsu! Choujou Daikessen! is a fighting game developed and published by Konami for the PSP to celebrate the 50th anniversary of shounen magazines Shōnen Sunday and Weekly Shōnen Magazine. 30 characters from both magazines will be playable with over 100 characters appearing as supports.

The concept is still a basic fighting game; you’re given a number of rounds to deplete your opponent’s lifebar to zero before he/she does it to you.

You’ll be able to play and compete with 30 characters from GetBackers, Inoyasha, Air Gear, Flame of Recca, Hajime no Ippo and many more

As for the gameplay, Sunday X Magazine only has two modes: the arcade and quest mode
In Arcade, you duke it out with some of the characters of Shōnen Sunday and Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Defeating them enables you to unlock soem of the characters
While in Quest mode, you’ll be pitted into a sidescrolling adventure with some paper-like monsters. Completing some of the chapters gives you access to some of the supporting characters

They are two methods of controls: one is for beginners where the special attacks are just one button away (this is very useful for newbies), the second is for intermediate players where you need to input a button combination to perform a special attack (this mode is for players who want to perform longer combos)

Controlling the characters in the game feels a bit stiff, the characters seems to have limited animations, even worse, the sounds really need some improvement as you can only hear grunts and squeals from the characters (hope they sould’ve add some more additional audio clips like shouting their special moves and some catchy one liners)

Overall, the game’s just an ordinary anime fighting game, nothing fancy but still fun to play, so if you’re an anime fan, this game is just for you, but if you’re looking for a new kind of fighting game, maybe you can try this game for while and see if you’ll enjoy it.

Game Rating: 2.5 out of 5

  1. I bought this game, I'm a mega fan of anime and manga, and I recognise most of the series in this game, in fact I suggested to my brother they needed to make a weekly shounen magazine fighter after jump ultimate. This includes the sunday mag series, so even sweeter :).

Upon playing the game, I was wrapped to play as ikki, makenouchi ippo and ban-chan among others, but after a bit of playing, the game just felt way too stiff and limited in it moves. I know that alot of moves can be unlocked, but even so, they are still limited to one move her button set at a time and I think this lets down the variety of the fights. I really like the music, and the unlock character system is fair, so its great, if you're an anime or manga fan, don't pass this up, but if you're a regular fighting gamer, give it a miss, theres better on the shelves.
