Being Bad is Good in “Wreck-It Ralph”

Kids and adults alike would appreciate Walt Disney’s latest 3D animation ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ as it shatters it’s way into Cinemas just last November 1.

The story which takes place where every childhood has gone through—the world of arcade gaming introduces Ralph, the villain of the game called Fix-it Felix Jr. Ralph’s role is to wreck the same old building as the actual gamer of the arcade controls the good guy, Felix who has a magic hammer that can fix whatever Ralph shatters. In the movie, after the arcade lights go off, all the game characters becomes more than just a game character as they come alive and is free to do their own life like celebrate another day of work or go dating and stuff!

As the citizens of Fix-It Felix game celebrate the game’s 30th anniversary, they award Felix Jr. a medal for being the hero of the day while Ralph is at a “Bad-Anon”, which is sort of a small session where fellow villains of the other arcade games share their feelings or talk about what stuff bad guys talk about.

As the main protagonist (or should it be antagonist?) of the story, Ralph gets tired of always being the ‘bad guy’ and thinks of abandoning his game to see a medal from other games and prove that bad guys can win too. He then goes “turbo” after jumping off to another arcade to claim a medal from Hero’s Duty. Without any villain, the game is put in temporary out of order giving the characters of Fix-It Felix the fear their game will be unplugged.

Felix then goes to look for Ralph who WRECK-lessly leaves Hero’s Duty with a cy-bug (a game enemy and virus that becomes whatever it eats). Enter Sergeant Calhoun which is the boyish but strong soldier of the game who sees it’s her duty to destroy the Cy-bug and goes off in search of Ralph together with Felix.

Things become even more interesting after the said characters end up in the cutesy-candy themed kart game called Sugar Rush where Vanellope von Schweetz, a glitch of the game uses Ralph’s medal as a means to join the kart game. The game’s king—
King Candy says that Vanellope cannot join any competition because she is seen as just a programming error of the game. The story later on reveals that Vanellope wasn’t a glitch at all and that a real villain has entered and dominated their game.

The plot then builds on Ralph and Vanellope’s friendship and how Ralph will prove that even though you’re bad… it’s good.

Who would have thought there was life after each game?

It was awesome how the movie perceived another angle in gaming. Each gaming character comes alive every time the game isn’t being played anymore. It’s surprising, refreshing and absolutely something any generation would be entertained about because kids of the ‘80s and the 90’s who enjoy seeing their beloved classic games like Street Fighter, Pacman, Sonic The Hedgehog, etc. while kids of this generation appreciate a story with a good sense of friendship, humor and of course gaming.

Although this movie wouldn’t probably touch the hearts of the kids nowadays who’s not really familiar with Ryu, Zangief, Bowser, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pacman, and the long list of other awesome game characters who has made the ‘80s and 90’s kids happy and proud of having played this game will probably cause those very games to be re-lived and hopefully back in the market!

The movie is voiced by John Reilly (as Ralph), Sarah Silverman (Vanellope), Jack McBrayer (Felix), Jane Lynch (Calhoun) and Alan Tudyk (King Candy/ Turbo). Wreck-It Ralph is a wonderful evoking movie which blends the right mix of 8-bit and current 3D animation could probably be the best of its genre since ‘Toy Story’.
