Bioware‘s recently launched sci-fi MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic goes free-to-play this coming November. Star Wars: TOR is one of the major MMORPGs that suddenly shifted to the F2P market, some other major MMORPGS include Lord of The Rings Online, Dungeons & Dragons Online, DC Universe Online.

The change to a F2P business market was due to the sudden drop of subscribers from the past few months, where their subscribers dropped from 1.7 million to less than a million (some estimate that it is around 400,000).

Although the game will be entirely free, there will be some limitations for free users, such as limitations to some higher-level areas and other game features. You will be able to have unlimited access through one time purchase or a subscription option.

  • Subscription – A service designed for players who want unrestricted access to all the game features via ongoing subscription or by redeeming a Game Time Card. In addition to gaining access to all game content as our current subscribers do now, Subscribers will receive ongoing monthly grants of Cartel Coins*, the new virtual currency that will be introduced later this fall. Cartel Coins can be used to purchase valuable items including customizable gear and convenience features that will enhance the game play experience.
  • Free-to-Play –The first 50 levels will be free-to-play, with some restrictions on access to new content and advanced player features. Some restrictions can be “unlocked” with Cartel Coins.

All current subscribers of Star Wars: TOR will receive Cartel Coins and special in-game items, you can check this link for more details:
