Geek themed restaurants are not a common sight in the Philippines, compared to other countries such as the United States and Japan, they have tons of them. Luckily, we discovered one cafe that will make any geeks feel at home.
The Sci Fi Cafe was opened just a few weeks ago and is located at the fourth floor of Robinsons Galleria. At a first glance, you wouldn’t notice the cafe as an actual restaurant thanks to the sheer number of action figures displayed at their glass walls, in fact you might even mistook it as a toys/hobbies shop.
Inside the cafe will great you with tons and tons of figures, statues and replicas from popular sci-fi, fantasy and superhero movies, comics, cartoons and video games. You name it, they have it, from Star Wars to Lord of The Rings to Ghost Busters up to the Avengers. The vast collection of figures can be found everywhere, from the glass displays up to the ceiling where a squadron of X-Wings, Y-Wings and TIE Fighters. There were two LED TVs mounted on top of the wall that features documentaries in the making of movies such as the Transformers and the first X-Men movie while the sound system were playing popular songs and themes from other popular movies.
The service staff there was very hospitable, something you would commonly find in a high class restaurants. They were kind enough to let us use some of the props such as the lightsaber for some pictorials.
And now let’s talk about the food, just a heads up to some as the foods served here are a bit pricey (ranging around from PhP 260 to PhP 450 for a meal). Their menu comprised of traditional American food, you may also noticed the names on their menu, as you’ll definitely know that the owner is a true geek and is creative at giving names, from the Fantastic Four Cheese pizza to the Iron Ham Carbonara pasta up to the Steve Rogers Burger. As for the food’s taste? they were excellent, we tried two pasta dishes (which include their best seller The Grinch Pesto pasta and The Godfather pomodoro pasta) and a Jaws Fritters. The servings are also quite good, even with one side dish, we were already full.
Overall the Sci Fi Cafe is a good place to eat with friends, and don’t let the price discourage you though as the quality and taste of the food are definitely great. One con here would be that the cafe would be the misconception of it as a hobby store, maybe some small changes on the exterior design would be make the cafe more recognizable as a restaurant and still maintain its geeky theme.
I would definitely go for a round two at the Sci Fi Cafe in the future.
