Back in December 2012 when the live action movie of the manga/ anime ‘Samurai X‘ finally screened here in the Philippines, I mentioned in the movie review I did that the movie had all the potential to expand its franchise and even possibly come up with a sequel. Around that same time as well, Mediatres Studio, the Spanish distributor for the Samurai X film indeed announced during the XVIII Salon del Manga de Barcelona event that a sequel has been greenlit!
Now that a sequel is finally in the works, the cast is slowly being completed and recent news have popped up showing who Kenshin (portayed by same actor Takeru Satoh)’s next rival will be. And it is no other than… *drum roll please* Shishio Mokoto, the ruthless and coldblooded swordsman who despite his completely burnt body has been able to survive to conquer and bring chaos to all of Japan. Shishio is reported to be portrayed by Tatsuya Fujiwara, the same actor who played as Light Yagami in the live action trilogy of the manga/ anime ‘Death Note‘.
Now that there’s a face to the new rival of Battousai, fans worldwide are surely anticipating the next movie which is set to be released sometime 2014. More great news follow as the franchise will actually release TWO sequels the same year! The first sequel will be “Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc” and “Rurouni Kenshin: The End of a Legend Arc” as the film revolves around the long story of the fabled “Kyoto Arc” storyline which will be based on the manga created by Nobuhiro Watsuki. Movie Director Keishi Ōtomo returns to also to work on both films for Studio Swan while we can expect that the rest of the cast (Emi Take as Kamiya Kaoru, Munetaka Aoki as Sanosuke Sagara and Taketo Tanaka as Yahiko Myojin) will return to join the highly anticipated movies!
