With the plethora of new generation of games both existing and soon to exist in the market today, developers are obviously going to expect its customers to buy and play their newer products and casting out the old ones, and together with this said expectancy, EA Games; one of today’s biggest game developer and publisher and creator of the popular Battlefield and Command and Conquer Franchises, announced that they will be shutting down online service for their older game titles in hopes to focus more on the current and newer ones.
For some it might not mean much but shutting down online services for PC games would mean multiplayer features will cease to operate indefinitely, also any gamers who are going to experience technical problems in game might not be supported by the developer itself.
A total of 50 game titles will be hit affected by this announcement and EA only has this to say:
“Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running. Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June. We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games. We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don’t have anything to announce.”
