Despite being the OC edition of the GTX 740, it only featured a single fan set up. Also despite having a GB DDR5 memory, it does not require additional power output from the 6-pin PCIE-E connection straight to the power supply. The ASUS model promises to have 25% longer lifespan thanks to its dustproof design, which was a major dilemma for PC gamers since graphic cards are a major factor for the PC, and not to mention cleaning the graphic card is much easier.

As for performance, we conducted a test on 3DMark and Unigine Heaven Benchmark, so far the result was ok considering that the GTX 740 is more of a low to mid-range card. The Unigine Benchmark gave it a score of 710 with an fps score of 28.2 when running on high settings with normal tessellation. The 3DMark showed acceptable results where it conducted a series of benchmark tests.

With regards to games, we tested several games that are playable on low-end and high-end PCs, using the GTX 740 OC on the Legend of Korra, it managed to play at around 50-60 frames per second on high settings. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel can also run the game on high settings with around 60 FPS, but when turning the PhsyX feature to high, the framerate drops at around 30-40 depending on the number of PhysX effects popping out on the screen. While Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor drops at 15-20 FPS when on high settings, but configuring the game on medium setting with some parameter tweaking, it can run at 25-35 FPS.

The included GPU Tweak software lets perform overclocking tweaks on the GPU in a much convenient manner, without the need to head to the BIOS menu and restarting the computer. You can even adjust the fan speed and monitor the GPU temperature at the same sitting, which is a convenient program for those who want to exceed their GPU’s limit.

Overall, the Geforce GTX 740 OC can be a hit or miss, a hit for gamers who are on a budget and looking for a new GPU for their aging cards, a miss if you were expecting a powerful GPU with newer GPU models are appearing with a few plus on the price tag. But if you are in need of a decent card that is around PhP 4,000, the GTX 740 OC won’t disappoint you.

Rating: 3 out of 5

Special thanks to ASUS for lending us the test unit
