We check out Toycon’s Grand Launch Event that shows us what to expect for their main event.
The said Grand Launch event is focused more on introducing to the newcomers on what they can expect on the actual convention on June 19 to 21 at the Megatrade Hall in SM Megamall.
Compared with last year, there are only fewer toys and figures that are on display, which the majority are from Maxi Collector and Big Boys Toys
The organizers of Toycon PH; which are now called the Asian Comics, Toys and Hobbies Collective hosted a press conference and a series of stage activities at the Newport Mall in Resorts World Manila, this is their third press conference at the said venue.
A series of trailers from upcoming geek movies were featured, namely Jurassic World, Minions, Ant Man, the Fantastic Four, Terminator Genysis and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Also some of the Aftermath Videos of the previous Toycon events created by the Reimaru Files team were showcased, giving the audience a glimpse inside the annual geek convention.
A series of panel discussions was also held at the Grand Launch that discussed several topics in the pop culture scene. Earl Manghirang from FanboySEO discussed about being a geek blogger, JusticePH Tim Villasor and Glenmarc Antonio shared some latest info in the world of DC Comics and the Reimaru Files team talked about the rise of the video game media. Also several sponsors and brand partners had their respective stage appearances to showcase their latest line of products and service.
And the press conference was conducted right after the panel discussion where representatives from the ACTHC and major sponsors such as iFlix and Pacific Licensing Studio (distributor of the Warner Bros. and DC Comics) were present and answered some of the inquiries from the press. One of the most sought out concern is the decision to retain at the Megatrade Hall despite the limited capacity to hold a very large crowd, the organizers are aiming to move to a larger venue such as the SMX Convention for their 15th anniversary, which is slated for next year.
A number of activities and competitions were revealed including a geek quiz night activity on Friday night, replacing last year’s after party that caused a controversy to the community. Some of the regular competitions will return, namely the cosplay competition, toy photography and diorama contests and fan film competition, a new Aftermath Video making competition will make its debut this year where the Reimaru Files team and ACTHC will be collaborating in handling the contest.
After the press conference, the NCR qualifier round for the World Cosplay Summit was also held, the winner of this round will get to compete in the WCS Philippines finals at the Hero TV Face Off event, where the winning pair will represent the country in the WCS Championship in Nagoya, Japan.
