A few days ago, valve released a blog post stating that it is adjusting its position on publishing content on Steam that makes use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

To give you a quick rundown, Valve is starting to allow games that make use of AI technology but with measures to prevent abusive practices:

  • First, it must be disclosed that they are making use of said technology for their game.
  • Second, none of the content generated, whether it be live or pre-generated, must not include illegal or infringing materials.
  • Third, the game experience must be consistent with the marketing materials associated with it.

Additionally, live-generated AI content, meaning content created by AI technology while the game is being played, must have guardrails in place to prevent the creation of content that would violate the rules on the platform. This must also be disclosed to Valve.

Valve will also be creating a reporting system that allows users to point out games or content that breaks these rules. At the moment, can’t allow adult content that uses live-generation with AI to be involved with their platform.
