Riot Games is set to launch League of Legends Classic on July 29, bringing players a nostalgic yet refreshed gameplay experience. Designed to capture the spirit of early League while incorporating modern refinements, Classic offers a unique way to revisit the game’s roots.
Kicking off Season 3 this year, League of Legends Classic brings players back to an earlier era, complete with the early Summoner’s Rift map, champion roster and kits, fan-favorite items, and more
Anchored in Season 3 (2013), League Classic isn’t a strict recreation of a single patch. Instead, it’s a curated blend of the “greatest hits” from early League of Legends. Players can expect:
- Old-school systems: Runes, Masteries, items, and Summoner Spells return in their original forms.
- Classic champions: A starting roster of 60 champions, many featuring pre-rework kits.
- Summoner’s Rift revival: The iconic map is back, enhanced with updated lighting, textures, and shadows for improved clarity.
Quote from Executive Producer Paul Bellezza: “League Classic is personal for us. You’ve been asking for this for years, and honestly, a lot of us at Riot have missed that early League feeling too. There’s real nostalgia there. We’re not going for a one-to-one recreation of the old times. We want League Classic to scratch that itch while still bringing something new to the table. At its core, this is about honoring League’s roots. Whether you’ve been here since the beginning or you’re coming back after years away, we want this to feel like home.”
Over the years, League has evolved into a complex game with diverse champion fantasies, high mobility, and intricate mechanics. League Classic dials back the pace, emphasizing sharper strengths and weaknesses among champions. This encourages strategic decision-making and combat that feels closer to the original experience.
With its mix of nostalgia and modern polish, League of Legends Classic offers both longtime fans and newer players a chance to explore the foundations of one of the world’s most influential competitive games.
